Books Written For Children

There has constantly been a profitable market for books for children. Parents know that the bedtime tale is an chance for parent and child to connect. For some reason, human beings need stories and children predominantly need that similar world. Fairy tales, as well as being enjoyable, also served to train good moral values in the child. Years ago, books for children usually split into stories for boys and stories for girls. This differentiation line is more hazy today.

Boys have always tended to read adventure stories concerning pirates, explorers, and soldiers. Girls were more likely to read about ponies, finishing schools, and training to be a nurse. Infrequently in books for children, there would be a tomboy such as George in the Famous Five books. The history told of an tranquil world where children could securely play all day in the woods or on the river, unsupervised by nosy adults. In today’s books for children, the girls get caught into dangerous situations as frequently as the boys. Take Hermione from the Harry Potter books, for a case in point.

The contemporary reader may feel the classic books for children from the past to be a little old-fashioned, but that’s part of their attraction. Reading them is comparable to snuggling in front of an old black and white movie. It’s a comfort blanket. The world of Peter Pan and Wind In The Willows is comforting.

Occasionally, children’s fiction throws up a mastermind. Roald Dahl was one such man, when he wrote books for children, creating tense stories in which hardly any grown ups could be trusted. There is more distrust and less naivety in his books. The world sorrowfully lost Roald Dahl, but there was an additional genius waiting around the bend, and her name was JK Rowling.

The Harry Potter books appear to appeal as much to boys and girls. Boys who had in no way expressed any curiosity in reading freely now await the next Potter book eagerly. Some critics say there is no place for religious conviction in the Potter world, and children should not be exposed to the shadowy arts of magic. However, if you read any of the Potter books for children, the child will learn about friendship, loyalty and bravery. Not bad ideals for any of us.

Publishers are urgently looking for the next success story in books for children. It could be a name being rejected right now. JK Rowling was turned down nine times before her first book was accepted. So if you are interested in childrens literature, you might want to try your hand at writing.

How to Find Good Books For Your Child to Read

Are you having a hard time finding good children’s books for your children to read that are uplifting and the kind of books you would be proud for them to read.

Here are some ideas and guidelines for your consideration.

1. Is it a classic book? That is how long has it been in publication and has it stood the test of time? If it is a new book, is the author already well known? Or is it a new author?

2. Has it won any awards? Some common ones to look for include the Newberry medal and the Caldecott medal.

3. What are others saying about the book? Can you find some good detailed reviews on the book?

4. What kind of values is the book teaching your child? This can be difficult to determine but usually reading it yourself first will be a good indicator.

5. Is it age appropriate? For some books this is quite obvious but with others you may have to read the introduction and publishers notes.

6. If you are looking for a more detailed guide, try looking in the book “Honey for the Child’s Heart.” This reading guide is full of suggested reading lists and practical advice on how to choose quality books for your child to read.

7. Has it made it on the best seller list? This is not always an indication of anything but it can at least give you an idea of its popularity.

8. What is the background on the author? Is the author from a Christian background or from an otherwise clean and good taste background? This information can often be found by simply entering his or her name into Google and reading the results that appear.

9. Another idea is to visit the American Library Associations website at http://ala.org and to look at their recent reviews and awards of childrens’ books. They often have useful and helpful information for finding great books for your children to read.

10. Lastly, know that even though it can be challenging, it is possible and well worth while to spend some time doing your homework in order to find uplifting and inspirational books for your child to read.

Childrens Book of the Month Club - The Perfect Gift

Reading is almost becoming a lost art. Between the video games, children’s DVDs and the endless variety of shows that are geared towards children it’s hard to imagine a time when a child would actually sit down and read a book for enjoyment. It’s kind of a shame, really, because when you read you can be anyone or anywhere you want. There are some children, however that love to read, and they say that this stems from them being read to at a young age, plus having access to some material that they would actually enjoy reading.

I can remember, as a child, when we would have the childrens book of the month club in our school. Ever month we would go home with an order form that would be chock full of the latest and greatest books for children. When that order came in we would absolutely devour those books. It was always an exciting time. I feel sorry for children that do not have that same love for books as I did when I was a youngster. Fortunately some people are not allowing that to happen to their child, or grandchild.

There are plenty of services out there that now offer a book of the month club that is specifically geared toward the younger reader. If you have young children or perhaps know someone that does they can really benefit from having such a subscription. Giving the gift of reading is a very precious thing, and when you watch a child grow up loving books it adds so much more to their lives than when they only have the video games and TV to fill the quiet moments.

Tim has a love for reading and is following a life long dream of being an author.

If you want to share the gift of reading with someone you love, or are looking for some great book clubs for yourself we can guide you to the program that suites you best. Visit us online at http://www.bookclubz.info/
